Botulinum toxin (Botox®, Xeomin) is a manufactured injectable medication used to relax the muscles of the face which cause wrinkles associated with facial expressions. Treatment with botulinum toxin can cause your facial expression lines or wrinkles to be less noticeable or essentially disappear. Areas most frequently treated are frown lines located between the eyes known as “11s”, crow’s feet (lateral areas of the eyes), forehead lines, and radial lip lines (smokers or water bottle lines).
Botulinum toxin can relax the muscles of the face and neck associated with facial pain to help treat conditions such as jaw pain (TMJ disorder), head/neck pain, migraines, tension headaches, and referred pain.
Botox is diluted to a very controlled solution and when injected into the muscles, it is almost painless. Patients may feel a slight burning sensation while the solution is being injected.
The procedure takes about 15-20 minutes and it generally takes 2-10 days to take full effect. The results can last up to 3 months but with consistent and repeated treatments, the results may last longer.
The amount of Botox needed is decided through a comprehensive exam and plan determined by your doctor. The amount used is customized to the patient and is individualized based on the patient’s needs and concerns. Cost is best determined at a consultation appointment.
